A satirical play poking fun at the overblown tragedies produced in the time of the Restoration, first staged in 1671. It uses the device of having three men working to develop a new play and having the actors trying out various scenes. The play itself is made up almost entirely of excerpts of existing dramatic works, and especially at those of John Dryden. (In the etext of the printed play which you can access from the link below, the play script is published on the right hand pages with every left hand page full of footnotes describing from which plays the scenes, lines, and allusions are taken.) - Summary by ToddHW Cast list: Bayes: ToddHW Johnson: Greg Giordano Smith: Beeswaxcandle First King of Brentford: Adrian Stephens Second King of Brentford: GaleHall Prince Pretty-Man: Alan Mapstone Prince Volscious: Ethan Hurst Gentleman Usher: Claudia Caldi Physician: Larry Wilson Drawcansir: Elijah Fisher General: Priamedes Lieutenant General: Lynette Caulkins Cordelio: redrun Tom Thimble: Jim Locke Fisherman: David Purdy Sun: Agnes Robert Behr Thunder: Claudia Caldi First Player: Mathias Thorndal Second Player: Alan Mapstone Third Player: redrun First Soldier: Sonia Second Soldier: Elijah Fisher First Herald: Inkell Second Herald: David Purdy Amaryillis: Michele Eaton Cloris: Jenn Broda Parthenope: Inkell Pallas: Hope Lightning: Availle Moon: oogiesragdoll Earth: Stunning Shirley: Elsie Selwyn Stage Directions: Devorah Allen Editing: ToddHW
